Poisoning? Here’s what to do, says SPCA

The RandWest SPCA shared some helpful tips for what to do if you notice your furry friend might have ingested poison.

Uitvalfontein — Seeing your pet suffer because it was poisoned is a terrible ordeal to go through, but early intervention can save its life.

The RandWest SPCA shared some helpful tips for what to do if you notice your furry friend might have ingested poison.

“Since we don’t have a veterinarian, we usually refer people to a veterinarian for medical assistance as soon as possible, if the dog is still alive,” SPCA manager René van Straten stated.

She continued that pet owners should also open a case at the police station.

“The police have to investigate the matter, as it is animal cruelty to poison an animal. The SPCA will also support the police as much as possible with the investigations.”

René noted the best they can do is advise people on how to prevent poisonings from happening. She advised pet owners to keep their animals inside the house at night or in the back yard; out of sight of the public. Further make sure there aren’t any strange objects lying around in the yard the animals could possibly eat. Then also make sure you always have access to emergency medical services for the animal.

“There are many ways to slow down the effects of the poison, but the animal must receive medical treatment as soon as possible,” concluded René.
