According to chairperson Brenda Eloff, the SPCA currently has four members, of whom one lives in Durban and the other two in Rustenburg. Not only are those members too far away to correctly fulfil their duties, but Eloff mentioned she will be retiring at the end of July. That leaves the SPCA with a pressing need for committee members.

“We do not have enough members at this stage to fulfil the duties set by the NSPCA,” she stressed.

She further mentioned they need at least three members, although five would be adequate.

Eloff described the duties of committee members as important and stated it is their job to organise fundraisers to ensure there is enough money to meet monthly obligations such as salaries, petrol expenses and maintenance.

The most important job is ensuring that all shelter animals are properly taken care of,” she explained.

She also stated there is HR work and accounting work for auditors.

“We are always thankful to the community for giving what they have. However, now we need help to ensure that the SPCA can continue their work. Committee members are there to make sure the SPCA’s doors stay open and to manage the SPCA according to the mandate that protects animals against abuse,” she concluded.
