Fresh start for your health in the New Year

Affinity Health shares simple, practical tips to help residents reset their health, boost energy and start the new year feeling refreshed.

After weeks of indulging and staying up late, many people start the new year feeling tired, bloated or low on energy.

According to health cover provider Affinity Health, January is the ideal time to reset your health and ease your body back into healthier routines.

“The aim of a post-holiday reset is not extreme dieting, but gentle, sustainable habits that support your body’s natural detox systems. The goal isn’t to punish yourself. It’s about giving your body a break, recharging your system and building healthier routines that last,” said Affinity Health CEO Murray Hewlett.

Hewlett recommends starting with rehydration, as dehydration is common after the festive season.

Simple habits to feel better

“Drinking six to eight glasses of water a day helps flush toxins and supports digestion. Warm water with lemon in the morning and herbal teas like rooibos or green tea can also help. January is also a good time to return to whole, fresh foods. Focus on vegetables, fruits, lean proteins and whole grains, while cutting back on sugar and processed foods that cause energy crashes and inflammation,” he added.

Getting back into a regular sleep routine is equally important.

“Aim for seven to nine hours of sleep, limit screen time before bed and create calming evening habits,” Hewlett suggested.

Move, rest and reset

Light exercise such as walking, stretching or yoga helps boost circulation, improve mood and restart your metabolism. Supporting gut health with fibre-rich foods and probiotics like yoghurt can also ease bloating and improve digestion.

Affinity Health advises limiting alcohol and reducing caffeine intake, while managing stress through simple self-care practices like walking, journaling or spending time outdoors.

“January is also a good time to schedule a health check-up. Regular screenings can catch problems early, especially if you’ve noticed weight gain, tiredness, or changes in appetite. Your doctor can check your liver and kidney health, blood pressure, and overall well-being to help you start the year strong,” Hewlett concluded.
