Family targeted in brazen house robbery

Family reeling after home robbery leaves son shot in the back; suspects still at large.

A family in Kocksoord is still in shock after a house robbery on September 12 left one of its members with a bullet lodged in his back.

The mother, who cannot be named as some of the suspects are still at large, told the Randfontein Herald that she woke shortly after midnight to the sound of movement in the house.

She called out to her son but received no reply. Realising it was not him, she began screaming. Her son came out of his room to investigate and collided with one of the intruders. After a brief scuffle, he noticed the firearm and fled back to his room. While running, he was shot in the back. The intruder attempted to force the bedroom door open but eventually fled.

Due to swelling, the bullet remains lodged in the young man’s back. Three people were in the house at the time, and only the TV was stolen. The suspects had cut through the burglar bars and opened a sliding door to gain entry.

The following day, community members tracked down one of the suspects, who was arrested. The Herald can confirm that a case has been opened and the individual is due to appear in court next week.

According to the mother, three other suspects are still at large. She added that this was not an isolated incident, as four other break-ins reportedly occurred in the area on the same night.

Police were approached for comment, but none had been received at the time of publication. Updates will follow once available.
