Community shaken after young student murdered in Homelake

Tragedy strikes as a young student is found murdered, with the CPF urging the community to speak up against GBV.

A student was brutally murdered at her commune on November 25, prompting the local Community Policing Forum (CPF) to urge residents to report gender-based violence (GBV) and seek help immediately.

“We are faced with the loss of another young woman, still in the prime of her life and a student with her whole future ahead of her,” said CPF chairperson Ruan Sheppard.

He warned that domestic abuse can escalate quickly, from verbal threats to physical violence.

“It is a devastating reality to help carry the body of someone whose life has been cut short. She was just finishing her exams, now she will never see the joys of December or celebrate the holidays,” Sheppard said.

Sheppard urged anyone in an abusive situation to act decisively.

“Value yourself and your life. Do not become another statistic. Speak up and fight for your rights.”

Provincial police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko confirmed that a 22-year-old suspect has been arrested.

Charges of murder and attempted murder have been opened.

Details of how the victim was killed and whether a second victim is involved remain unclear at this stage. Police are investigating.

“The suspect is due to appear before the Randfontein Magistrate’s Court today [November 27],” Sibeko said.

The college where the victim studied confirmed receipt of the media request, and a response is still pending.
