Bekkersdal remembers Kwa Noxolo victims

District leaders call for healing and intervention after December 21 shebeen murders.

In a show of unity and resilience, West Rand District Commissioner Major General Lorraine Challen led police, community leaders, and stakeholders in a prayer session in Bekkersdal, calling for intervention following the mass murders at Kwa Noxolo shebeen on December 21.

The programme, co-ordinated by Warrant Officer Patricia Tshifularo of the Social Crime Prevention unit, began with a prayer at the shebeen, followed by a stop at Bekkersdal West Clinic, where the victims received medical attention. Participants then prayed in front of the Bekkersdal hostel and at the taxi rank before proceeding to the Full Gospel Church of God Worship Centre for the second phase of the programme.

Challen emphasised the importance of community and police working together to combat crime.

“We need to stand in the gap and pray for those who are vulnerable and in need. Romans 13:1–4 reminds us that those in authority are appointed. As the police, we are called to protect the vulnerable, stand against wrongdoing, and maintain peace,” she said.

She thanked the families of the victims, survivors, and all stakeholders present for their support and participation.
