Operation Shanela brings strong police presence to Bekkersdal, Westonaria

Senior Gauteng police officers led Operation Shanela on Saturday as law enforcement intensified efforts to tackle crime in Bekkersdal and Westonaria.

Residents in Bekkersdal and Westonaria saw a strong police presence on Saturday, March 7, as law enforcement agencies carried out Operation Shanela, a crime prevention operation aimed at tackling criminal activity in the area.

The operation was led by Gauteng Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Fred Kekana and forms part of a nationwide effort to curb serious and violent crime.

Police were joined by several partners, including metro police departments, community policing forums, Home Affairs immigration officers and private security members from Growing Gauteng Together 2030.

Officers conducted roadblocks, stop-and-search operations and patrols across the two communities.

Kekana was joined by the West Rand District Commissioner, senior officers from the Gauteng Provincial Head Office and the West Rand District, as well as members of Rand West City Public Safety and local CPFs.
Before the operation began, the team received a briefing on the crime situation at the Bekkersdal and Westonaria police stations and discussed ways to address crime challenges in the area.

Police spokesperson Colonel Noxolo Kweza said the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to increase police visibility and improve safety in communities affected by crime.

Throughout the day and into the evening, officers were visible in the streets, interacting with residents while carrying out patrols and safety checks.
