Protect your home this Easter holiday

Simple security checks and precautions can help West Rand families protect their homes while enjoying the school break this Easter.

With the Easter school holidays now here, many West Rand families are packing their bags, planning road trips and looking forward to a well-deserved break.

While you are busy organising Easter egg hunts and family time, it is also the perfect moment to ensure your home is not left as an easy ‘find’ for criminals.

Fidelity ADT is encouraging residents to take a few simple steps before heading off for the holidays to help keep homes, vehicles and neighbourhoods safe.

“Holiday periods are wonderful for families, but they can also create opportunities for criminals if homes are left unattended or security is overlooked,” says Charnel Hattingh, Group Head of Marketing and Communications at Fidelity Services Group.

“A few quick checks before you leave can make a big difference.”

Top safety tips before you hop into holiday mode:

• Do not advertise an empty home
Avoid posting travel plans or holiday updates on social media before or while you are away.

• Test your alarm system
Ensure your alarm is in working order. Like all household appliances, it needs to be tested regularly. Do not leave it until the day before departure, as you may need technical assistance, which could take a few days. Also double-check that all windows and doors are locked and secured before leaving.

• Ask a neighbour to keep an eye out
Request a trusted neighbour to collect your post, move bins, and switch lights on occasionally to create the impression that someone is home. If this is not possible, consider putting outdoor lights on a timer. If you are hiring a house-sitter, ensure they know how to use your alarm system correctly.

• Light it up
Outdoor lighting and motion sensors are effective deterrents, as criminals tend to target dark, quiet properties.

• Update property access
Ensure your security provider has access to your property in case of an emergency. If you do not have an access solution in place, speak to your provider about available options.

• Be smart when travelling
Avoid leaving valuables visible in your vehicle. Keep handbags, laptops, and tablets in the boot, and avoid using your phone while stopped at traffic lights. Always park in well-lit and secure areas.

• Report suspicious activity
If anything seems out of place in your neighbourhood, report it immediately to your security provider or your local SAPS.

“If your children are at home during the holidays, make sure they understand the importance of keeping doors locked and not allowing anyone into the home without permission. If you have a security system, teach them how to activate and deactivate it, and how and when to use devices like panic buttons. Keep a list of important contact numbers, including 10111, visible and accessible for emergencies,” says Hattingh.

“Security is a shared responsibility,” she adds.

“When communities stay alert and look out for one another, everyone benefits.”

As families enjoy chocolate eggs, long weekends and quality time together, Fidelity ADT reminds West Rand residents that a little preparation can help ensure the only surprises this Easter are the ones hidden in the garden.
