‘Diesel shortage’ results in waste collection challenges

The DA will be writing to the Chief Whip of the Council and the mayor's office due to a diesel shortage resulting in a lack of refuse collection.

Refuse collection is currently a major challenge in some areas of town yet Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) says they are putting in all efforts to ensure this service runs smoothly.

This comes after DA chairperson Seth Sekhokho revealed RWCLM is facing a diesel shortage, resulting in a lack of refuse and waste collection.

He has since called for urgent intervention.

“We have been reliably informed that there is no diesel available for technical teams. This means that once more, residents will have to go without refuse and waste collection, while challenges escalated to the municipality will also go unattended,” Sekhokho stated.

Sekhokho is concerned that the failures of the executive will leave residents bearing the brunt.

“The DA will be writing to the Chief Whip of Council as well as the mayor’s office. We demand an explanation. How is possible that something as essential as diesel, runs out? The residents deserve better,” Sekhokho claimed.

Municipal spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa said some technical issues are being resolved.

According to Montshiwa, despite the challenges, the refuse has been collected per the schedule, however, certain areas remain uncollected.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused due to the challenges we faced. We are working to collect refuse in these areas in the shortest possible time. We have diesel and will continue with our refuse collection services without any disruption,” Montshiwa said.
