Here is how to update your electricity meter
The municipality needs to recode at least 8 000 meters within the next seven. They have issued steps to help residents update their electricity meters before the deadline.
The Rand West City Local Municipality has released an updated statement regarding pre-paid electricity meters which will not be accepting voucher tokens in the future. Residents will need to update their meters before the deadline.
According to municipal spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa, on November 24, millions of pre-paid electricity meters in South Africa will no longer accept voucher tokens.
Therefore, the municipality advised residents to update their meters. Montshiwa mentioned the update of the meters is a straightforward process that does not require any hardware or software changes.
Residents should enter two 20-digit codes to update the Key Revision Number (KRN) of the meters. These codes can be obtained when purchasing electricity recharge vouchers from authorised vendors.
“Rand West City Local Municipality needs to recode at least 8 000 meters within the next seven days to meet the deadline. We kindly request all residents who haven’t registered their prepaid meters to do so as soon as possible,” Montshiwa emphasised.
The municipality has given four steps to recode your electricity meter:
• First, obtain your two key change tokens from your local municipality
• Second, enter the first 20-digit recode token and wait for it to be accepted
• Third, enter the second 20-digit recode token and wait for it to be accepted
• Finally, enter the 20 digits of your electricity voucher to recharge based on the KRN version 2
