Greenhills residents in dire need of water donations

Ward 6 residents are facing water shortages, and councillor Martin Brown is appealing to the community to support households left with dry taps.

Ward councillor Martin Brown is appealing to the community to share borehole water or assist in other ways after many households in Greenhills (Ward 6) were left without water.

Brown said he requested support because the Rand West City Local Municipality has struggled to deliver services, leaving residents facing daily shortages. When the tower pumps fail, households are left with dry taps and only a three- to four-hour window for water access.

He explained this has been an ongoing issue for years, with routine shutdowns from 22:00 to 04:00. However, a new problem has emerged – water outages lasting hours at a time.

“The only official communication came via a notice in the Randfontein Herald, confirming that Rand Water had begun restricting flow,” Brown said.

In recent days, the situation has worsened, forcing residents to live without water. Brown is urging the community to offer boreholes or donate water, providing collection addresses and times for delivery.

“This will help us to rally support for those most affected. Please post your details in your ward group or send them directly to me. Let’s stand together and support one another during this time. Your generosity can make a real difference,” he said.

The Herald approached municipal spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa, who confirmed that water restrictions are in place as mandated by Rand Water. He noted that reservoir operations, including the two Greenhills reservoirs, have been suspended, and water tankers are being deployed to affected areas.
