Rand West urges residents to curb excessive water use

With Stage 2 water restrictions and critically low reservoir levels, the municipality has raised concern over residents’ water consumption.

The Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) has issued a warning to residents about critically low water levels and ongoing supply challenges affecting several areas.

RWCLM spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa confirmed that Stage 2 water restrictions, implemented by Rand Water, have led to significant supply issues across the city.

“Despite our continuous communication regarding reservoir levels, excessive water usage by residents has resulted in critically low water levels in several areas,” he said.

As a result, Glenharvie, Venterspos, Bekkersdal, Zuurbekom Extensions, Simunye Extensions, and parts of Westonaria currently have no water supply, with levels having dropped to 0%.

Montshiwa added that some parts of Randfontein are also experiencing challenges, including Mohlakeng Extensions, Toekomsrus Extensions, Homelake, Greenhills Extensions, and Robin Park.

“We encourage residents to conserve water immediately and follow water-saving guidelines to prevent further shortages. Additionally, customers are urged to pay their municipal services, rates, and taxes promptly,” he said.

He concluded that the Operation Patela initiative aims to raise funds to help the municipality address water supply challenges and lessen the impact of ongoing restrictions.
