Electricity prices could rise by 9.1% in Rand West City

Randfontein households and businesses could soon feel the pinch as electricity costs edge higher.

Rand West residents will potentially be paying more than 9% more for their electricity in the coming months.

Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) has approved a draft electricity tariff increase of 9.1% for the upcoming year, pending final approval from the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa).

However, the increase is not yet final.

Residents and stakeholders are expected to be given an opportunity to comment during public participation processes before the tariff is finalised. Once approved, the new electricity tariffs are expected to come into effect from July 1.

Phillip Montshiwa, RWCLM spokesperson, said residents can send an email to customerservice@randwestcity.gov.za and comment on the proposed tariff increase. For low-income and vulnerable households, Montshiwa added that residents who cannot afford the tariff must apply for the indigent subsidy.

Municipal manager Thabo Ndlovu said the proposed increase forms part of the municipality’s annual budgeting process and aligns closely with Nersa’s adjustments.

“The proposed increase comes amid ongoing concerns about the rising cost of electricity and its impact on households and businesses already facing economic pressure. Consumers are encouraged to stay informed and participate in consultation processes as the municipality moves toward final approval,” he concluded.
