SPCA appalled by another case of neglect: Two cows euthanised as a result
The SPCA was horrified once again after discovering two cows and a dog that had been severely neglected on a plot in Vleikop.
The RandWest SPCA was appalled upon arriving at a scene where two cows and a dog had been severely neglected by their owner, resulting in serious wounds.
Manager Inspector René van Straten said they received complaints about an owner who failed to provide necessary medical care for two cows.
Upon arrival, Van Straten also noticed a dog chained nearby. She met with the owner and assessed the cows’ conditions, discovering that one of the cows had been immobile for over a month and had developed severe pressure wounds.

“The owner claimed he didn’t know what was wrong with the cows and refused to euthanise them,” Van Straten explained.
She added that the exact issue with the cows was unclear, as the owner had never called a vet to perform blood tests. Although the state vet was present, the owner couldn’t afford the tests.

When questioned about the neglected dog, the owner stated it had been chained because it was attacking the cows.

Van Straten then approached the dog and found the chain embedded in its neck. In addition to the neck wound, she noticed the dog was underfed. After removing the chain, the owner threatened to shoot the dog.

Van Straten quickly loaded the dog onto her vehicle and rushed it to Homestead Veterinary Clinic for immediate treatment.
“The owner claimed he was just as surprised by the dog’s injuries as we were,” she said.

Unfortunately, the cows had to be humanely euthanised. The dog, now up for adoption, is fearful but, according to Van Straten, needs loving care to adjust to a new home.
