Rand West Fashion Festival: A celebration of talent and expression

Entrepreneurs and emerging artists had the opportunity to showcase their talents and creativity at the recent Rand West Fashion Festival, highlighting local innovation and artistic flair.

The Rand West City Arts Council recently hosted the Rand West Fashion Festival, giving local designers and artists the opportunity to showcase their creative talents and share their personal stories of growth and inspiration.

The festival, which took place on June 27 to 28 at the Greenhills Stadium, focused on empowering upcoming entrepreneurs and helping them achieve their creative dreams.

Chairperson of the council, Silas Busang Nyembe, said the event was used to educate and empower the youth beyond the traditional classroom.

On Friday, fashion industry leaders shared a word of motivation and spoke about the ups and downs of the industry. Experts such as Lebogang Tsinyane, Mac Mashilo, Lethabo Bereng, Collen Monnakgotla, Kgomotso Seboko and Boipelo Letlape shared their leadership traits at the event.

On Saturday, models took to the runway to showcase the talent of fashion designers. According to Silas, the stage was transformed into a dynamic showcase of style, rhythm and local power. From runway presentations to brand activations and music performances.

“Randfontein came alive with pure talent!”

The festival promised a unique fusion of inspiration, community celebration and style while reinforcing Rand West’s commitment to developing its creative economy from within the township ecosystem.

“This was not just an event, it was our township’s moment to step into the light of the creative culture. Our mandate is to maximise the fashion capacity of local designers and to help them foster partnerships. Through this method, we can help artists engage with primary sources and get them recognised.”

Entrepreneur Bongani Dlamini shared his journey as the founder of Bee Dlamini Opulent Clothing. As a person in the LGBTQ community, Bongani wanted to create inclusive jewellery to fit all standards. Since he comes from a family that loves style, he incorporated those influences to start his own company that caters to those who struggle to find jewellery that fits their lifestyles.

He now designs hats, shoes, clothing and jewellery that aim to uplift the mood of many.

“Just keep going. It’s never about how many likes you receive on social media, but rather remembering why you started. Someone will see you one day,” he advised.

Collen Monnakgotla is one of the West Rand’s first fashion designers and ultimately set the stage for many upcoming designers to pursue their dreams. His journey started as a hobby while patching clothing; however, it soon turned into a promising career after he began making patterns.

He now heads a modelling academy which focuses on helping five to 16-year-olds achieve their dreams.

“Always love what you do, and do what you love. If you have the right amount of passion, it will drive you to reach your dreams,” he concluded.
