Students take a stand against GBV during mass march

Westcol TVET College hosted a dialogue and march to raise awareness about gender-based violence.

Westonaria Banquet Hall recently hosted a gender-based violence (GBV) dialogue and march to commemorate Youth Month with Westonaria Westcol students.

Around 100 students gathered to raise awareness. It began with an aerobics session led by Thabo Letlhake from Simunye Gymnasium, followed by a discussion on issues affecting young people. A large march then took place under the theme Together for a Violence-Free Society to protest gender-based violence.

Constable Knowledge Lukholweni from Westonaria Police Station addressed GBV and femicide.

“Society is no longer safe. We can’t turn a blind eye to the surge of GBV,” Lukholweni said.

He also warned residents in abusive relationships about potential negative outcomes.

Nonkoliso Selepe from Westonaria Randfontein and Poortjie’s (WRAP) HIV/ Aids Project described the event as successful and was held in partnership with Westcol, Goldfields, and the Department of Health.

“We are happy and all went according to plan,” added Letlhogonolo Mokataka from Westcol.
