Community shows love at Cast Aways for 67 minutes

This Mandela Day, Cast Aways Animal Sanctuary opened their doors to the community to help care for animals in need.

Cast Aways Animal Sanctuary invited the community to spend their 67 minutes volunteering on Mandela Day.

Chris van Rooyen, from Cast Aways, explained that having volunteers is necessary for their organisation as they need help feeding the animals, giving them clean drinking water and brushing them, but most important is the attention the animals receive from the volunteers. It also helps them when a volunteer can be on the lookout for animals in need of assistance.

He added that the number of volunteers is a concern, as they mostly only get Grade 12 learners who have to spend time giving back to the community.

Trudy Bolton, a volunteer, explained she decided to use her 67 minutes to give back to the animals in need. She fed the cats in Cast Aways’ care and cleaned their food bowls.

She stated, “Not many people show interest in supporting people and organisations such as Cast Aways, that is why I decided to reach out.”
