Westonaria High School’s Babalo bags five distinctions
Babalo Matshaya from Hoërskool Westonaria High School and a 2024 matriculant gave a five-star performance and will be heading to the University of Cape Town to further his studies.

Babalo Matshaya, a Hoërskool Westonaria High School matriculant has much to celebrate after achieving five distinctions.
The subjects he excelled in are Afrikaans FAL, Mathematics, Physical Science, Life Science and Business Studies.
“I am proud of myself. From December 2023 and through my final exams I stayed focused and worked super hard to reach my goals. So seeing it all pay off feels amazing,” said Babalo.
Besides being disciplined and having worked hard he said the most important thing was to fully understand the work. Babalo further stated he always asked questions when he was confused or wanted advice on how to improve.
He also followed a strict schedule and studied ahead of class, which he believes gave him ‘that edge’.
“Another big motivator for me was the school’s Wall of Fame for top achievers. Seeing the names of past learners up there inspired me. I wanted to see my name up there someday too. I also found people on social media to look up to and they helped me to stay focused and disciplined,” Babalo added.
What he would remember most about school is the memories he made with friends, who he added were his escape when the academic work got too stressful. He will always be grateful for them.
“My advice to other learners is to stay consistent. Matric is just one year but it can completely shape your future. Make the sacrifices, stay disciplined and keep working toward your goals, you’ll thank yourself later. Also, find a source of inspiration, whether it’s people you look up to or someone who has achieved something great,” he said.
This year he will be studying Actuarial Science at the University of Cape Town.
“I want to now grow into someone confident. I am capable and ready to take on any challenge or new opportunity. For me, it’s all about becoming the best version of myself and making a positive difference wherever I can,” he concluded.
