Respect, responsibility and resilience – HSW’s new deputy principal ready for action
Newly appointed Hoërskool Westonaria High School deputy principal, Mario Marshall Mokwena, is intent on being a catalyst that shapes the futures of the learners he will guide.
Mario Marshall Mokwena has been appointed as the new deputy principal of Hoërskool Westonaria High School, and he is determined to build a promising future for the youth under his guidance.
After serving 20 years in education, Mario officially took up his new position on November 1.
Born and raised in Potchefstroom, he began his teaching career at Promosa Secondary School before moving to Randfontein Secondary School and later Hoërskool Jan Viljoen. He eventually joined Hoërskool Westonaria High School, where he now steps into his leadership role.
Mario views education not merely as a career but as a calling to shape the lives of young people.
“I have a great passion for the youth, and education allows me to directly influence their lives for the better. Children are like water – it’s important that we channel them in the right direction, and I see that as a great privilege,” he said.
As deputy principal, Mario’s priorities will include refining discipline, promoting mutual respect, and strengthening work ethic and pride. He will support the principal while guiding both teachers and learners.
He acknowledges that even intelligent and talented learners sometimes become self-destructive, and seeing this struggle has made him realise how vital teachers can be as anchors in learners’ lives.
Mario aims to be a catalyst for hope, resilience, and positive change by fostering a safe and nurturing learning environment. He hopes to instil respect, responsibility, honesty, kindness, and perseverance among learners.
Quoting Nelson Mandela, he said, “Education is the great engine of personal development. It is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor, the son of a mine worker can become head of the mine, and the child of farm workers can become a president.”
He shared a heartfelt message to both learners and parents.
“To the parents: We build together on what is precious to you and share in the successes and failures of our children.
“To the learners: Always remember that the teacher standing before you is thoroughly prepared and more than willing to feed your hungry minds with knowledge. Most of us are also parents, and you can trust that we put your interests and prosperity first – sometimes tired, frustrated, and overworked, but never without understanding and love,” he said.
