An application to have a section on the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal reserved as a nudist resort has been approved.

At this stage Sandy Bay in the Western Cape is the only clothing-optional beach in South Africa where it is (unofficially) considered acceptable to tan and bathe completely naked.

The Public Eye newspaper reported that the KZN Naturists Association applied for 500 metres of Mpenjati Beach, near the Blue Flag Trafalgar Beach and the Mpenjati Nature Reserve to be declared nudist-friendly.

Although they didn’t report as to when this will come into effect, many locals are up in arms and do not agree with the decision. They argue that it will attract perverts, rapists and other unsavoury characters. The municipality believes these to be unsubstantiated rumours and that such a resort in fact will boost tourism.

In other parts of the world, nudist beaches are very common.

According to the Traveller’s Digest the top 10 nudist beaches in the world (from 10 to number on) are:

• Bellevue Beach, Copenhagen, Denmark

• Wreck Beach, Vancouver, British Columbia

• Haulover Beach, Miami, Florida

• Massarandupió Beach, Bahia, Brazil

• Es Cavallet, Ibiza, Spain

• Plakias Beach, Plakias, Crete, Greece

• Grande Saline, St Bart’s

• Lokrum Island, Dubrovnik, Croatia

• Playa El Agua, Margarita Island, Venezuela

• Le Centro Hélio Marin, Montalivet, France
