I refer to the story in the Herald of Corrie Rooskrans from Toekomsrus, in the 17 April edition.
The article had to do with people who burn rubbish near his home (at an illegal dumping site), and that he frequently must get treatment at a hospital, as he has asthma.
I would like to point out that Mr Rooskrans is not alone.
I reside in Homelake, Randfontein. Recently it seems due to the colder weather, people have started burning what would seem to be rubbish in our suburb. The smell is like a mixture of oil or solvent and rubbish bags, and it’s really bad for my health (by the way, I’m a normal healthy person).
Often, as soon as this smell fills the air, I get a terrible headache shortly after. Due to this, I have to close all the windows of our home, and can’t get any fresh air when I sleep at night. At some point I’ll wake up not being able to breathe, and usually end up vomiting, as the fumes actually get into my nose and mouth, and it feels like a burning sensation down my throat (similar to heartburn).
The following day my head feels like, you guessed it, rubbish! (No pun intended.)
I would like to appeal to whoever is burning this rubbish (I hope you read this) – please be considerate and think of the bigger picture. It’s posing a health risk to all of us. I’m sure I’m not the only person in Homelake (or Randfontein) who has this problem.
I would like to appeal to the Herald possibly to investigate this matter in Homelake.
