LETTER: ‘Thank you for returning my phone, making an arrest’

A 22-year-old recently encountered a harrowing experience when his phone was stolen, but thanks to the police's swift action, they retrieved his phone and caught one of the perpetrators.

On March 15, I was walking home from church when five men approached me. I noted they acted as though they knew me. They quickly surrounded me, and one of the men grabbed another’s hand tightly before instructing me to sit on the pavement.

They showed me a knife and I knew they wanted my phone. I pleaded with them not to hurt me, but they became aggressive and told me to shut up. I pulled out my phone and gave it to them, because my mom always told me that in a case like this, you don’t argue with the robbers, you just give them what they want and look at their faces so that you can identify them.

After the encounter, I asked for help from a nearby business before going to the police station, where I met police officers Du Plessis and Chauke. At the time, they informed me they did not have an available police van, and as soon as one was available, they would come and fetch me.

At the time, I didn’t trust them and gave up hope that I would see my phone again. Two days later, they came to fetch me to go and arrest one of the suspects. He told them where he had sold my phone, and the next day, officers Chauke and Du Plessis brought my phone to my house.

It was like a dream to me. I was so happy and I won’t forget what these two police officers did for me. I hope they keep up the good work by helping the Mohlakeng community. There are hard-working and helpful police officers out there.

To officers Chauke and Du Plessis, thank you so much for making me feel safe, keeping me updated and returning my phone. May the Lord Almighty protect you and give you strength and wisdom. I love you both.
