Glenharvie rugby making waves
It's hard to believe that only three years ago Glenharvie Combined School did not have a high school rugby team.
When Corné Erasmus, deputy principal and coach for the first team and U/10s joined the staff at Glenharvie High and Primary School in 2015, learners started asking if they could form a rugby team.
“There’s a lot of school spirit. A lot of boys want to play rugby because of the nice blue jackets the first team wears. They are all proud to be Blue Hawks,” said Erasmus.
They started by playing a few seven-a-side friendly matches and in 2016 they enrolled in the Golden Lions Middle Schools League, where they exceeded everyone’s greatest expectations in Pool C.
All four high school teams made it to the finals that year. In 2017 they moved up to Pool B and the school’s first team, the Blue Hawks ended second in the league.
This year they are playing in Pool B again and thee of the four teams made it to the finals.
“Getting this far in just three years motivates the players to practise more and to give their best. They take their rugby very seriously and they play to win,” said Erasmus.

According to Erasmus the coaches and the rugby players have an equal dedication to their sport.
“They don’t get any pressure from their parents. They support their children and everyone is so proud of how far this school’s rugby teams have come,” he said.
Tsepang Selelale, Leoatla Seno, and Philane Kinase have been chosen for the U/18 North West Team. Philane Kinase has also been selected to play for the Golden Lions U/18 team.
But it’s not just the high school boys who know their rugby. Three primary school teams are playing in the finals of the Gauteng playoffs.
Vuyo Gwenxane made it to the Golden Lions U/12 team and Duncan Fiford was selected as the U/10 player of the tournament at Bekker Rugby Week.
It’s only been three years since the high school started their first rugby team and this year three teams will be taking part in the Virseker Beker 2018 which will be televised in on KykNet (DStv channel 144) during the third term.
