Andries outsprints opponents to end 2023 on a high

Two locals placed first and third respectively at the Colossus Athletics Club 10km race.

Andries Sesedi who runs for Nedbank was in fine form as he outsprinted his opponents during the Colossus Athletics Club 10km race held last month.

The race started and finished at the Greenhills Sports Stadium and was previously known as the Joseph Madodla Challenge.

It took just 15 minutes for the local and skilled long-distance runner to make his move and lead the pack. Also in contention were Andries’ training partner and former champion Kabelo Melamu from Murray & Roberts and Lucky Mohale from Boxer but as the trio got into the Randfontein CBD, Andries pulled away slightly crossing the finish line in a time of 28 minutes and 11 seconds. The second place eventually went to Lucky who was hot on Andries’ heels and managed a time of 28 minutes and 41 seconds. Kabelo placed third with a time of 28 minutes and 56 seconds.

Cian Oldknow from Hollywoodbets Athletics Club was the first woman to cross the finish line while the first local girl was none other than Cornelia Joubert from Boxer (second place). Tebogo Mokgosinyane from Nedbank placed third.

“As the local organising committee, we are happy with the turnout. Everything went according to plan and we are over the moon with the course despite being cut short of about 900m. Next time, we will make a point that this does not occur. We are just grateful that the event could be hosted as it has been two years since the pandemic,” said Andrew Vusi Mathiya, Colossus Athletics Club’s chairperson.

Meanwhile, Tumi and Lerato Paai from the Moribo Group have indicated there are plans to once again host the West Rand Marathon which did not materialise due to Covid-19 in 2020.

“We are still on track to organise the West Rand Marathon. We are going to work with people like Vusi and other athletics stakeholders so watch this space for more details. We will make an announcement soon,” added Tumi.
