If you’re fit enough, you’re good enough

The director of rugby and coach of Randfontein Rugby Club shares the ins and outs of fitness.

Hennie van Eck, director of rugby and coach at Randfontein Rugby Club emphasised the importance of fitness in any sporting environment.

“I believe any team that is fit is already a step above a team that is unfit,” he said.

He explained if a person is tired they are more likely to make mistakes, however, if they are fit, they can think better on the field.

At the club, they practice three times a week. On Mondays, they work on recovery after the weekend so they start with lighter exercises that aren’t as busy as their other practices. On Tuesdays, they work out. Hennie explained they use a fitness instructor’s exercise plans which they incorporate with their rugby drills. On Thursdays, they do the last bit to prepare for the game that takes place on the weekend.

As a former player for the club himself, Hennie still keeps fit by visiting the gym.

“When you are fit, you are at your best.”

He noted fitness goes hand in hand with talent. It enables players to truly live out their potential.

“Further,” he said, “being fit reduces the chance of injuries.”

A healthy diet is always a factor in fitness, added Hennie. With club rugby, it can be difficult at times as the players work hard during the day and many have children.

“If a person commits to a healthy diet it is possible. It is every person’s own decision to stay healthy. As the saying goes ‘you are what you eat’.”

He mentioned there are numerous dietary options available and it is wise to visit a dietician to give the best option for each individual.

“Keeping fit might not always be fun, but if a player is fit, rugby is fun. If a team is fit, they perform well. Players enjoy the game more and play their best.”

He advised, “Start with fitness even if you feel unfit. It will take time but push through. You won’t regret it.”
