Out of trouble, into the ring
With the main goal of protecting children from life on the streets and exposure to drugs, Randgate Boxing Club focuses on teaching discipline, respect and life skills that will benefit the youth well into adulthood.
At Randgate Boxing Club, children are trading the dangers of the streets for discipline and purpose in the boxing ring.
Willie Consalves, the head coach, explained that every punch these children give builds character, confidence and a chance at a brighter future.

“We have been a family at Randgate Boxing Club for 55 years. We have a passion for the sport, and we aim to keep children off the streets. We want to keep them away from drugs and also instil the confidence that comes with the sport, which will stay with them forever.”
Willie noted that the boxers at their club have gone on to become SA champions and have also received Springbok and Protea colours. He added that their main goal is teaching children respect, humility, self-control, self-defence and how to keep a healthy body and feel good about themselves.

“Boxing is one of the sports where you have to be in control of yourself and believe in yourself to achieve your goal, and then still be respectful towards others as well as your opponent.”
They currently have 12 boxers and four coaches in their club, and there are no costs involved to join as they intend to help the youth. He noted that any person is welcome to join – girls and boys from the age of six to 10, especially, as this is the prime age for a child to learn boxing.
