Locals roll up sleeves to clean up Newlands
A local security company assisted with the operation which uncovered some drug-related objects in between the waste.
CSI security company together with the community and the local Newcom association cleaned up neglected areas in Newlands in the east of Pretoria.
The clean up took place on Saturday from 07:30 and lasted into the early afternoon.
The community felt the areas targeted were being neglected by the Tshwane metro.
“We decided to clean places where we felt the metro was lacking in terms of service delivery,” said Jomari Delport of CSI security.
The clean-up saw those involved gather two loads of rubbish.
A member of the community managed to gather an additional two loads of waste on his bakkie.
Delport said the waste consisted mainly of plastic bags, tin cans and empty alcohol bottles.
Various objects believed to be used to distribute drugs including zip-lock bags were found.
“There are also areas where people make open fires to cook food on the sidewalk.”
Delport said the community felt authorities could do more to actively remove unwanted drug traders from the area.
“Residents can also report suspicious activities to 10111 and their local security companies.”
Deport said this would increase vigilance in the area and lower crime.
“We as CSI security are proud to be part of this community,” she said.
“By keeping the area cleaner we can make it safe and free of drugs.
“When we join hands and work together we can all make a difference.”
