Steyn to play in Australia

Although he announced his retirement from Test cricket, the Pretoria based fast bowler has made himself available for limited-overs cricket for the Proteas

Multiply Titans and Proteas fast bowler Dale Steyn has signed for the Melbourne Stars for the 2019 Big Bash League in Australia.

The 35-year-old, who was with the Proteas in the 2019 World Cup in England, was forced to return home early without playing a game due to a shoulder injury.

Although he announced his retirement from Test cricket a few months ago, the Pretoria based fast bowler has made himself available for limited-overs cricket for the Proteas.

He aims to call it a day after next year’s T20 World Cup.

On Tuesday, the Australian franchise confirmed that Steyn was their latest recruit.

“I’m very excited to join the Melbourne Stars and meet my new teammates and play in the Big Bash,” Steyn said.

“This is the first year where the cricket schedule gives me the opportunity to come down and enjoy everything Melbourne has to offer. It’s a great city and I’m looking forward to spending part of the Australian summer there. Having watched closely from afar, the BBL is a top tournament which has a great reputation overseas. I love cricket and want to make a difference in any team that I am playing for. I have had time to get fit and have been bowling for two months now. I can’t wait to get over there and get going,” he said in a statement.

The 2019/20 Big Bash season kicks off on 17 December 2019.

The man affectionately known as the “Phalaborwa Express” won’t be the only South African in Australia. Titans teammate and former Proteas great AB de Villiers recently signed with the Brisbane Heat in Australia.

Another Proteas teammate who’s in the bash is none other than the big-hitting Chris Morris.

Before jetting off to Australia in December, Steyn rejoins the Cape Town Blitz for the 2019 Mzansi Super League which kicks off next month.
