Voortrekker Monument Park Run
By getting involved in community projects such as fun runs, you are able to enjoy yourself and maintain a healthy lifestyle at the same time.
A fun walk/run called the Park Run was launched on Saturday at the Voortrekker Monument, where a 5km route was followed by the participants.
The initiative, aimed at encouraging the public to maintain a healthy, balanced lifestyle, is expected to be expanded to parks all over the city, including the north.
Rhoda du Plessis, the event director, said this will be a weekly event and that the initiative is free for members of the public.
“The aim of this initiative is to get a balance in work and life.
The Park Run is not a competitive event, but rather a social one. The modern lifestyle is fast-paced and leaves little time for fitness. With this free initiative the public will get the opportunity to adopt a healthy lifestyle.”
Former Comrades hero Bruce Fordyce confirmed in a statement that the launch was a huge success. He said on the day of the launch that about 301 people registered to participate, some as young as 11.
After each event, the results are posted within three hours on the website and participants receive a notification via sms and e-mail.
The Voortrekker Monument Park Run also offers picnic and braai facilities at no extra charge for those who would like to stay after the run and enjoy the historical setting.
Entrance for all park runners is free and members of the public are encouraged to take part in this initiative every Saturday at 08:00 at the Voortrekker Monument. For more information, go to www.parkrun.co.za.
