Illegal vendors growing

Illegal vendors on busy road continue to be a headache for authorities and motorists alike.

Despite several operations by the Tshwane metro police to clear a strip of Garsfontein Road of illegal vendors, it is business as usual for the ever growing number of opportunistic business people.

According to Ward Councillor Nick Pascoe, motorists stopping to support these traders are contributing to their growth.

“It is obvious from the amount of support these illegal vendors are getting that there is a market for their wares. Motorists are causing traffic hazards. Then there is the obvious question as to the health concerns these sellers create,” he told Rekord.

Furthermore, Pascoe said that he had made calls to the metro to establish a more permanent site to accommodate the sellers and create a safer environment for motorists and bordering residents.

“These people are here to stay, the metro cannot control the scourge, that is clear. The least we asked for is toilet facilities, even if these must be temporary toilets. Yet, despite the metro’s announcements that it is focused on job creation, calls for a formal trading area in the east of Pretoria are falling on death ears.”

The metro was unable to comment at the time of going to print.
