An in-depth research project about the people of Tshwane – including arts and language, urban planning, social issues, criminology, history and economics – was launched by the University of Pretoria (UP) and the Tshwane metro on Tuesday.

The good relationship between UP and Tshwane was again evident during the launch of the Capital Cities Project at the Pretoria City Hall.

The project is UP’s new institutional research theme, where researchers and postgraduates students across faculties with related research objectives and topics are grouped together.

According to the university, experts from the faculties of law, humanities, health sciences, engineering, natural and agricultural sciences, information technology, theology and economic and management sciences will collaborate on the project by deliberating about Tshwane and its people.

Vice chancellor and principal of UP, Professor Cheryl de la Rey, said the university had the vision of being the leading learning institution in the world, particularly in research.

The Tshwane metro executive mayor, Kgosientso Ramokgopa, said that Tshwane was excited to co-launch the Capital Cities Project with the University of Pretoria under the theme ‘Capital cities: space, justice and belonging’

“We are looking forward to a productive relationship with UP,” Ramokgopa said.

Investigations about Tshwane will be conducted across a variety of disciplines, including arts and language, architecture and urban planning, social work, criminology, law, history, drama psychology, anthropology, political science and economics.
