Cyclists attacked and shot at on Garstfontein Road

Attacks on cyclists on Garstfontein Road seems to be on the increase and are leaving residents worried.

Cyclists in the east of Pretoria are getting hot under their helmets after news broke of attacks on cyclists on Garstfontein Road. Dan Newman is a cyclist at the Parkview Cycling club. He and his partner were attacked on this road last Thursday evening. Both men are lucky to have escaped with their lives.

The cyclists noticed two men approaching them and after passing them heard three gunshots.

“We panicked when we realized the shots were being fired in our direction. We simply put our heads down and paddled hard to get around the first corner away from the attackers. Only later that evening I discovered a bullet hole through my helmet. It was a case of millimeters or I would have been dead,” Newman told Rekord.

He added that what was most shocking to him was that the incident occurred at around 18:30 in the evening. It was still light and Garstfontein Road was very busy with commuters returning to the far eastern estates.

“Garstfontein Road was packed with cars and the men were clearly visible. They shot at us despite all the possible witnesses. These guys were not playing around.”

During the same week, another cyclist was stabbed five times in a bike-jacking incident on the same stretch of road. Newman has reported the incident at the Boschkop police station.
