Yet another ATM bombing took place on Friday morning 03:00 at a shopping centre in Cradock Avenue, Lyttelton.
The police suspect that the bombing was the work of six criminals.
Police that were patrolling the area heard the explosion and rushed to the scene.
According to Lyttelton police spokesperson, Warrant-officer Hero Gumbu the suspects opened fire on the police and fled in two Opel Corsa’s and another unknown vehicle.
The police retrieved R155 600 at the scene and one hundred Rand notes worth R600 that had been torn.
Explosive material were also found at the scene.
According to Gumbu it is the criminals’ modus operandi to place the explosives in a plastic container.
“ATM bombings are a big problem in the area, because there are a lot of ATM’s,” Gumbu said.
The previous explosion was on 11 September, Gumbu said.
No arrests have been made, but Gumbu has assured that the police are busy investigating the matter.
