In an effort to curb the rate of crime in Heuweloord, have decided to revive a whistle blower initiative whereby domestic workers will take the leading role.
Residents are urged to sponsor and buy whistles for their domestic workers and gardeners, as whistles will be used anytime when they suspect any criminal dealings in the area.
Speaking to Jacky Kekana who is the chairperson of the Heuweloord Residents Association, this initiative will assist domestic workers including gardeners to communicate in case they suspect any criminal dealings in the area.
He said the plan was initiated a year ago and it was put to test whereby it was proved to be another form of a panic button. Kekana further said in some instances domestic workers could suspect criminal acts in the area and as some may not have or be able to use cell phones, it becomes a challenge for them to call for help.
“As many of the residents do not have land-lines anymore and rely on cell phones, whistles come in handy and it’s an easy way to alert others by blowing the whistle.”
Kekana further said they want to encourage the community in the area to be actively involved in this initiative and ensure that live in a crime free area. One of the concerned residents in the area said this way of combating crime will make things simpler as domestic workers and gardeners are the eyes and the ears of the area and that they will be able to contact the police to notify them about any criminal activities.
“Zenzile Malgas said employees will blow whistles when the see a suspicious car or person, then all the others will join in the blow to deter criminals. We are concerned about crime and our environment and we believe that when working together we can make Heuweloord a safer, clean, crime free and attractive residential area,” she said.
