Caution: dark intersections a crime hot spot

The theft of street light batteries has left many intersections dark at night, creating the perfect opportunity for smash-and-grab criminals to strike.

Dark traffic intersections due to non-functioning street lights may be the result of opportunistic thieves who are stealing batteries from remote mini-substations at major intersections.

Consequently, an increase of smash-and-grab incidents are prevalent at these dark intersections, one of which is the Watermeyer off-ramp.

A concerned citizen, Johan Muller, noticed that the frame of the mini-station on the Watermeyer off-ramp where the batteries for the traffic lights were locked in was broken.

“This is pure vandalism and a sign of the moral decay of our city. Thieves stole the battery from the lights and now there is a possibility that the intersection will be in complete darkness, making it easy for smash-and-grab offenders to strike.”

Motorists are warned to approach major intersections with care, especially at night.
