Centurion has become the main target for ATM bombers over the past few weeks, but on Friday morning a Nedbank ATM was blown up in Elardus Park by robbers who took off with an undisclosed amount of money.
According to the information given by the police, five heavily armed men wearing balaclavas held up the personnel and customers of the Engine garage on the corner of Boeing and Piering Street at one o’clock in the morning.
Captain Colette Weilbach said in a statement that after two attempts to blow up the ATM, the robbers managed to flee in a black Jeep Cherokee with an undisclosed amount of money. She further said they were driving in the direction of Thembisa, where they came across a Tshwane metro police vehicle.
It has been indicated that the robbers then fired some shots at the metro police. No one was injured and the robbers are still at large. Police have put measures in place whereby all ATMs will be visited on a regular basis to prevent any further incidents.
Anyone with information that can assist the police in their investigation is requested to phone the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111 or the Anonymous Tip-off Crime Line number at 32211.
