Six arrested in mob justice case

Mob justice has resulted in the arrest of six men who are being charged with murder.

Six suspects including a student constable, along with the owner of a property that was almost robbed, were arrested last week for murder after a suspect was beaten up in Kwaggasrand, the police confirmed. According to the Pretoria West station commander, Colonel Caroline Naidoo, two suspects were allegedly found on a man’s property in Kwaggasrand on Friday.

“The owner of the premises said that he had seen two men in his yard when he got back home. The owner alleged that he knew one of the men in his yard. While enquiring what the men were doing, an argument broke out between them.” Naidoo mentioned that the man the owner of the property said he knew allegedly had a gun and fled the scene.

“The owner of the house said that he then called some of his acquaintances for assistance, resulting in mob justice, with the one man being beaten by members of the community. Upon the arrival of the police, a man was found lying on the ground severely injured. He was taken to the Kalafong Hospital where he was declared dead,” Naidoo explained.

“Upon further investigations, the owner of the premises pointed out to the police the six people, one of whom was a student constable at the Pretoria West police station, who had allegedly participated in the assault of the deceased.” Naidoo confirmed that the six suspects and the owner of the premises were arrested for murder and appeared in court on Tuesday.

The six suspects pointed out by the owner of the property were acquitted of the murder charges, since it was the owner who had pointed them out. The latter is however, still being charged with murder and was granted bail of R2000. “The owner of the premises will reappear in court on 21 November. We are still waiting for post-mortem results to determine the cause of death. The second suspect, who fled the scene, was arrested at a later stage.”
