Khuli Chana charged with attempted murder
Hip-hop star Khuli Chana has been charged with attempted murder by the police, after CCTV footage allegedly shows Chana trying to run over a police officer, police said.
Sama award-winning artist, Khuli Chana, whose real name is Khulane Morule, has been charged with attempted murder by the police, after police obtained CCTV footage showing Chana trying to run over a uniformed police officer during the incident of his shooting, police said.
“An attempted murder docket was opened on Friday for the investigation against Mr Morule,” said Brigardier Neville Malila. Police stated that they received CCTV footage as well as statements from independent witnesses, depicting the events that took place last Monday morning.
“The evidence obtained corroborates the claim of police officers at the scene, that instead of stopping, the driver of the BMW tried to run over the uniformed police officers who flagged him to stop,” Malila added.
Chana was shot last Monday in Midrand at a petrol station, after police mistook him for a kidnapper. “For the record, Khuli Chana is innocent of any crime and is the victim in this matter. It is indeed sad that the SAPS have sought to paint him as a perpetrator who was the author of his own misfortune,” said Chana’s publicist, Sheila Afari.
She stated that the morning of the incident, Chana was not speeding when exiting the petrol station. “He was not speeding nor was he flagged down. We believe that, following the various probes into the matter, Khuli will be vindicated despite these attempts to ridicule his name and reputation,” Afari added.
A charge of attempted murder has also been laid by Chana after the shooting. “The attempted murder case where Mr Morule is the complainant is under investigation by the Independent Police Investigation Directorate,” said Malila.
