Residents walking their dogs in an open veld in Waterkloof Glen are raising concerns that the number of vagrants living on the property is steadily increasing. According to some residents, they have noticed a significant increase in crime along Lois Avenue.
Ken Jones told Rekord that the squatters, now living in the veld overlooking Armscor, the highway and Kloof Hospital, are setting snares to trap small animals and using children to gain access to properties along the border of the veld.
“We recently witnessed two small children fleeing over a fence. These children are being used by adults to gain access to properties. They get through burglar bars and steal keys and remotes, which are then passed on to their handlers who can enter the premises after deactivating the alarm. We saw the children.
“Our neighbors were burgled without the alarm being set off and I found a number of remote controls over the past week hidden in my pot plants.” Jones believes the crime is still petty at this stage, however, he has urged police to increase their patrols in the area.
“I believe the crime to date is petty crime, smash-and-grab, breaking into cars and stealing washing off lines. A number of incidents have been reported to the Brooklyn police over the past few weeks. We have had repeated entries into our property almost on a daily basis despite palisade fencing, electric fencing and security beams.”
