No more fake Mandela notes

As part of their Refresher campaign and in an attempt to maintain 'the highest level of quality and security', the Reserve Bank has launched a new security feature on Mandela notes. Little dots on the back and front have been added.

Fraudsters are going to have difficulty faking bank notes as new security features on the Mandela notes in the form of little dots will appear on both sides of the note.

This security feature was launched on Wednesday by the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) as part of their Refresher campaign. “Enhancing features on banknotes is an ongoing process to maintain the highest level of quality and security. This is in line with international best practice,” spoke SARB governor, Gill Marcus.

The Refresher campaign, which marks the one-year anniversary of the new series of Mandela banknotes, will be advertised via radio and television advertisements as well as online media and social network platforms.

“Bank notes with this new security feature will gradually be introduced from Wednesday. All current Mandela banknotes and the ‘Big 5’ banknotes remain legal tender and will continue to circulate,” said Marcus.

Members of the public are encouraged to look, feel and tilt the banknotes to check for a combination of security features.
