Two arrested after shoot-out with police

Police arrested two men in Silverton following a shoot-out. One suspect was shot and wounded while the other suspect was arrested on the scene.

Two men, aged between 20 and 30, were arrested in Silverton following a chase and shoot-out with police on Tuesday. The men were arrested for the possession of two unlicensed firearms, 9mm pistols, as well as a hijacked motor vehicle

According to police spokesperson,  Captain Tsekiso Mofokeng patrolling police spotted a black BMW X5 with two suspicious looking occupants around 13:30 on Tuesday near the Stormvoël road.

“The police approached the vehicle to investigate and the vehicle drove off and a chase started. The chase ended at Silverton when the vehicle were cornered in Cul-de-sac Street. The driver and passenger fired shots towards the police and the police returned fire wounding one suspect on the upper leg. The second suspect surrendered and was arrested at the scene whilst second one was taken to hospital under police guard.”

Mofokeng said the vehicle was hijacked in Olifantsfontein during a house robbery in June 2013 and the recovered firearms had the serial numbers filed off.

“Police continued with investigation. They searched the vehicle and found information that lead them another incident. The document lead the police to another house robbery that happened at Rustenburg and police are investigating. A possibility is being investigated that the suspects might have been involved in several serious and violent crimes.”
