Theft-out-of-motor vehicles on the increase
Theft-out-of-motor vehicles on the corner of Leyds and Esselen streets seems to be ecalating. Police warn motorists to be careful and to make sure their cars are locked before leaving.
Sunnyside police warned motorists of a sudden increase of theft out of motor vehicles on the corner of Leyds and Esselen streets. It is believed that criminals posing as car guards are committing the crimes.
“Bogus car guards carry gate remote control devices to intercept signals while motorists try to lock their cars. The victims are mostly drivers who fail to double check whether or not their cars are properly locked.”
Police expressed concern that despite several warnings to motorists about this criminal practice, some drivers still did not heed their warnings.
Motorists should not only rely on their vehicles’ remote locking systems, they should physically check if their doors are in fact locked.
Despite the fact that many of these crimes were a result of motorists’ negligence, police are doing everything in their power to fight this crime.
Besides conducting regular stop and search operations, police requested residents to provide them with information that could lead to the arrest of the culprits.
Police believed that in many cases, members of the public had crucial information needed to identify and arrest suspects. Therefore, co-operation is of the essence to crime-fighting efforts.
