Community members threatens to burn down police station

Burning tyres lit up the evening sky of Olievenhoutbosch on Friday evening.

Community members from Olievenhoutbosch burned tyres and threw stones at cars on the R55 and in the informal settlement on Friday.

These riots started on Thursday evening when about 200 people threaten to burn down the police station because three accused men were not released.

According to Reed Steynberg, the three men were arrested on Thursday for allegedly being part of group of seven men who murdered a man who they claimed to have raped a women.

They vigorously attacked the man on Tuesday. He was taken to Kalafong hospital where he died the same day, Steynberg said.

The three men were officially charged with murder on Friday and kept in police custody.

The residents of Olievenhoutbosch were up in arms on Thursday to release these men as they were prominent leaders in their community.

The police were informed of these rebellious behaviour and were able to close the station’s gates in time.

The protesters then threw rocks at the police station.

Police enforcement successfully restored order to the chaos later on Thursday evening.

Members of the police held a meeting the community leaders to discuss the situation.

It was decided that special provision should be arranged for the three accused men to appear in court on Friday to apply for bail.

Their bail application was however denied and they were send to Pretoria Central Prison.

They were unhappy with the police for not releasing three prominent members of their community.

Police spokesperson Captain Louis Reed Steynberg said police enforcement was send out to the different groups on the R55, in Ext. 19 and in Ext. 36 on Friday.

When the police arrived the groups scattered and formed smaller groups until order was restored, she said.
