Two shot in Mamelodi taxi violence

A man was shot and later died in hospital on Thursday due to taxi violence in Mamelodi East, police said.

A man was killed and another critically wounded in a shoot-out during clashes between rival taxi associations in Mamelodi East.

The shooting took place on Thursday morning at a small taxi rank near the BP garage due to unrest that began on Tuesday.

Tshwane metro spokesman, Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said a taxi official died in hospital at about midday after he was shot on Thursday morning.

“A commuter who was boarding a taxi was also shot during the violence. He was rushed to hospital where he remains in a critical condition.”

According to police spokesperson Captain Johannes Maheso  there has always been conflict between the local taxis and the taxi officials.

“The police intervened on Wednesday, and we all agreed with the officials that we will continue with our meeting on Thursday at 10:00. However, we received information about the shooting before the meeting could happen.”

Police, Tshwane metro police and the local policing forum were on guard at the scene to ensure safety and stability. No arrests have been made as yet.
