Cycling initiative to remember Sheldean Human

The murdered Sheldean Human's mother cycles to Witbank in memory of her daughter ànd other murdered and abused children the world over. Her wish is that more people become involve in this endeavour.

A mother’s love for her murdered child lives on. In memory of Sheldean Human who was murdered in 2007, her mother Elize Human cycled from Pretoria to Witbank and back over the weekend to raise awareness about the murder and abuse of children.

Human started the cycling event on the anniversary of her daughter’s death six years ago. “I do not believe in only 16 days of activism against woman and child abuse, it should be like that 365 days a year,” Human said.

She said that this was something she would be doing every year. Human added that the main reason she was doing the cycling event was because of what had happened to her daughter and also because of what was happening to other children. Human left Pretoria on Friday morning and arrived in Witbank at 16:00. She had two days’ rest at a family member’s home and returned on Monday.

“I would like to go further than Witbank but I do not have enough resources and sponsorship.” During her journey to Witbank, Human stopped once and sometimes walked next to her bicycle to stretch her legs. “While riding my bicycle I sometimes talk to the Lord to guide me or to my daughter to keep her eyes on me and the other children too, or I just focus on the road,” she told Rekord.

Human said that she would like people to join her in the cycling event to raise more awareness. This year marked the sixth anniversary of Sheldean’s death and Human said that her little girl would now have been 14 years old.

“It is still difficult for me without her. With the people around me I am constantly aware of what I am missing. I would still like to know what she would have looked like. I wish there was a programme that I could use to see what she would have looked like had she been alive today,” Human said emotionally.

“On my journey I always think positive thoughts and ask the Lord to keep me safe.” Human still lives in Pretoria Gardens and is working together with the People Search and Rescue Unit (PSARU). People can contact them on 0860-287-223. Human wants the cycling event to go far and would like the community to join her in this initiative.
