Construction halted to build backrooms

“They have intimidated the constructors and they were nowhere near completing the foundation. We moved our furniture outside, but the rain over the weekend messed our stuff up,” said disgruntled resident Joyce Chadibe.

It was supposed to be a project that dealt away with back room shacks in the townships, and most residents welcomed it with open arms, however residents are disgruntled because the project is nowhere near completion.

Several residents of Atteridgeville demolished their back room shacks with the hope that they would have proper rooms built for them by the Tshwane metro, however when the construction phase started several unemployed residents of Atteridgeville halted the construction.

The residents felt that the construction owners should have hired local community people instead of bringing in people from outside to do the construction.

“This construction will never see the light of day, because here we are unemployed but they bring makwerekwere (foreigners) to do the job. They should have hired people from within the community,” said a resident who preferred to be anonymous.

According to one of the residents whose shack was demolished to make way for the new back rooms, the construction workers only dug the foundation and left after they were threatened by some members of the community. “They have intimidated the construction workers and they were nowhere near completing the foundation. We moved most of our furniture such as beds, wardrobes and other furniture outside, but the rain over the weekend messed our stuff up,” said disgruntled resident Joyce Chadibe. She said residents who intimidated the constructors were messing up their chances of getting proper rooms.

“They should have approached the construction company and asked for jobs like everyone else. Nobody is entitled to a job,” she said. Rekord sent a request to the Tshwane metro spokesperson, Lindela Mashigo for comment on Monday but by the time of going to print no comment was yet received.
