Pretoria West motorists and residents need the Tshwane metro to attend to the blocked storm water drains that were causing several streets to overflow during torrential showers.
South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) chairperson Nagesh Chetty said residents find it difficult to drive and walk in some streets due to all the rain flooding, especially Quagga Road. “When it rains and the roads are flooded due to blocked storm water drains in the road, we suffer damage to our vehicles and only trucks are able to drive on the road. Quagga Road gets hectically flooded because most drains in the road are blocked.”
Chetty said letters have been sent to the Tshwane metro about the blocked drains but nothing has been done and it has been a problem since 2010. “The Tshwane metro is failing its residents. We often ask ourselves why we pay our rates and taxes if our complaints are not attended too.”
He pointed out that a lot of people from Pretoria West, Laudium, Atteridgeville and surrounding areas use Quagga Road every day and it was difficult for them when it rained.
“Several people’s car tyres get punctures driving in the rain because they drove into potholes or they hit the side of the storm water drains. This is really ridiculous. Something needs to be done about the drains,” motorist Sarah Lebone said.
She added that coming from Pretoria West it was time consuming to drive through Proclamation Hill and Kwaggasrand to avoid Quagga Road.
Chetty said all the complaints they have sent to the metro since 2010 have fallen on deaf ears. He said residents wanted the metro to attend to the storm water drains and make sure they are maintained because they feel with the right maintenance the drains would not get blocked.
An enquiry on the matter has been sent to the Tshwane metro.
