No power cuts for now

There will be no deliberate power cuts on Monday and Tuesday but the Tshwane metro remains on standby should Eskom require load shedding.

There will be no planned power cuts on Monday and Tuesday and the Tshwane metro remains on standby should Eskom require staggered cuts, the Tshwane metro council said on their website.

This comes after residents were left in the dark at the weekend when the power utility announced national rotational cuts in electricity supply when power stations experienced unforeseen technical problems.

Eskom said power systems experienced an increase in electricity demand due to the weather conditions which affected water reserves and generating units.

“There was an increase in load losses as a result of multiple tripping of generating units at the Majuba and Matimba power stations. Eskom has lost a total of 1 700 MW of generating power. The risk of load shedding for Monday and Tuesday, however, is medium to low,” said the power utility in a statement.

Eskom urges residents to switch off geysers, pool pumps and all non-essential appliances in order to allow the power system to recover.

“[We] will provide regular updates on the status of the power systems through all media platforms,” Eskom said.
