SACP declares war on metro

The SACP and others demanded that the metro be put under administration and investigated for corruption.

The newly-elected leadership of the Tshwane District SA Communist Party (SACP) has declared war on the Tshwane metro.

“We will fight until we win this battle. We cannot remain silent,” secretary Apson Makaung told reporters in Pretoria last week.

“We will not rest, we will work hard to mobilise all people in Pretoria until our grievances are addressed.”

The party said it felt aggrieved because neither the Presidency nor the department of co-operative governance and traditional affairs had bothered to respond to its memorandum of demands delivered during a march to the Union Buildings last month.

Participants in the protest included local members of the Congress of SA Trade Unions, the African National Congress Youth League, informal traders represented by the Tshwane Barekisi Forum, and the Tshwane Business Forum.

The marchers demanded that the metro be put under administration and investigated for corruption, and gave authorities 21 days to respond.

Similar protests were held in November 2012 and October last year.

Chairperson of the SACP in Tshwane district, Moleshatlou Maila, said it was time for the tripartite alliance to come through in Pretoria. He insisted the communist party was still relevant in the alliance.

“It is not an alliance which was entered into in smart and air-conditioned boardrooms. It was built in the bushes, where water was scarce. We cannot call ourselves alliance partners if we do not recognise each other,” Maila said.

The newly-elected leadership includes Lucy Lekgema as treasurer, Daniel Bhuda as deputy secretary and Hilda Monkwe as deputy chairperson.
