Power outages a problem with poor service delivery
Residents in Wonderboom South are at their wits' end about the poor service delivery regarding power outages in the area.
Electricity problems seem to be never-ending in the Moot, as residents in 12th Avenue recently had two separate incidents, one just last week, when their electricity was off for roughly 18 hours.
According to Belinda de Wit, who experienced both these power outages, only a few houses in the street were affected. From what she was told there had been a problem with one of the phases that supply electricity to the street. “These two events happened two weeks apart and it is unacceptable to be without power for 18 hours. Why is there no maintenance to ensure this kind of problem does not happen again?” De Wit asked.
De Wit is also upset about dangerous electrical cables that spark every time it rains or a strong wind blows through the area. “I have lived here for the past 30 years and have noticed that the service delivery of Tshwane has only worsened, especially the last two years. It seems like they just don’t care. We have residents studying towards exams and even people dependent on oxygen machines, that do not work without electricity,” she said.
According to Elmarie Linde, councillor of Ward 54, the biggest problem regarding these power outages is the fact that it takes Tshwane metro so long to restore the power. “I understand that this is a problem across Pretoria and not just in Wonderboom South, but people are upset that it takes so long for the metro to restore the power,” Linde said.
She also said because these kinds of power outages are so common these days, many Tshwane workers aim to restore the power when they can, but fail to address the cause of the problems and that is why they continue to reappear. “I laud their efforts to restore the power, but they need to look at the cause of the problem as well,” Linde said.
According to Lindela Mashigo, spokesperson for Tshwane metro, they are looking into the matter.
